Cataract Blindness in Honduras

There are 160,000 people blind from cataract in Honduras. Inadequate ophthalmology infrastructure and not enough surgically active local ophthalmologists combine to result in the lowest cataract surgery rate in Latin America.

More than half of the population of Honduras lives in poverty in rural areas. An estimated one third of Hondurans receive no health care at all. The Honduran health system is so overwhelmed with sickness caused by disease, violence, and infection that ocular health is unfortunately a secondary concern.

ECHO Foundation fights cataract blindness in Honduras by augmenting the efforts of local doctors with volunteer cataract surgery brigades and strategic infrastructure investments. We are committed to supporting sustainable practices that increase surgical volumes, contribute to educational and technological improvements, and grow the sector of ophthalmology in Honduras.
